According to ESPN NFL Insider Michael Smith Monday, the Washington Redskins and Donovan McNabb have agreed to a five-year extension, for $78 million, with $40 million guaranteed. If accurate, the deal would pay the 33-year-old (he turns 34 next week) slightly less than Tom Brady will receive from the Patriots over the life of a four-year, $72 million deal that was tacked onto the New England quarterback’s $6.5 million salary for the 2010 season.
The move comes just hours before the Redskins Monday night game against the Eagles. The extension also comes after McNabb was benched at the end of the team’s Week 8 loss against the Lions. In his first season in Washington, McNabb has thrown for 1,971 yards, seven touchdowns and eight interceptions while leading the Redskins to a 4-4 record.
